The easiest way to get iPhone contacts onto a Mac is iCloud Contacts. Sign in to the same Apple Account on both devices and turn on Contacts. Changes then stay up to date automatically; there is usually no cable-based “import” step required.

Before you begin

  • Make sure you are using the same Apple Account on the iPhone and Mac.
  • Connect both devices to the internet.
  • Check where your contacts are stored. Contacts from Google, Exchange, or another account need that same account added to the Mac; turning on iCloud does not automatically move every third-party contact.

Sync contacts with iCloud

  1. On the iPhone, open Settings > [your name] > iCloud.
  2. Tap See All next to Saved to iCloud, then turn on Contacts.
  3. On the Mac, choose Apple menu > System Settings > [your name] > iCloud.
  4. Select See All next to Saved to iCloud and turn on Contacts.
  5. Open the Contacts app on the Mac and choose All Contacts in the iCloud section.

Once iCloud Contacts is active, Apple keeps that contact list current across your signed-in devices. You do not need to repeatedly import the same list. If you are also moving to a new phone, back it up first; our iPhone restore guide explains the restore choices.

If your contacts are from Google, Exchange, or another account

  1. On the Mac, open Contacts > Accounts (or System Settings > Internet Accounts).
  2. Add the same Google, Exchange, Yahoo, or other account used on the iPhone.
  3. Turn on Contacts for that account.
  4. Return to Contacts and look for the account in the sidebar.

This is usually better than exporting and importing, because future edits remain synchronized with the service that owns the contacts.

Transfer a few contacts without syncing everything

For one or two people, open the contact on iPhone, use Share Contact, and send the contact card to the Mac with AirDrop, Mail, or Messages. Open the received vCard on the Mac and choose to add it to Contacts. Review duplicates before merging.

Troubleshooting

Contacts are missing on the Mac

Check that Contacts is enabled for the correct account on both devices. In the Mac Contacts app, make sure you are viewing the right account or All Contacts, not a group with no entries.

Duplicates appeared

Do not repeatedly export and re-import a full list. First identify whether the duplicate is in iCloud, Google, or another account. Then use Contacts to review and merge duplicates after making sure the correct account is selected.

iPhone says contacts are in a different account

Keep that account enabled on the Mac, or deliberately move contacts only after confirming which account should be your long-term home. This avoids accidental deletion.

Frequently asked questions

Can I import contacts from iPhone to Mac with a USB cable?

Modern Apple workflows favor iCloud or the contact’s source account for two-way updates. Finder can sync selected contacts from a Mac to an iPhone, but iCloud is normally the simpler way to make iPhone contacts appear on the Mac.

Do I need iCloud storage for contacts?

Contacts use very little storage, but you need an Apple Account and iCloud Contacts turned on. You can alternatively use another supported contacts account, such as Google or Exchange.
