A soundbar with no sound is usually suffering from one wrong input, one mismatched TV setting, or one loose cable—not a failed speaker. Work through the checks below in order. Test the same familiar TV program after each change so you know exactly what restored the audio.

Fast fix: do these five checks first

  1. Unmute both the TV and soundbar, then raise the soundbar volume.
  2. Select the soundbar input that matches the cable: TV/ARC/eARC, Optical, AUX, or Bluetooth.
  3. Set the TV’s speaker output to Audio System, Receiver, External Speakers, or the equivalent.
  4. Reseat the cable at both ends and confirm it uses the labeled ARC/eARC or optical ports.
  5. Unplug the TV and soundbar for two minutes, reconnect them, and test again.

Trace the audio path

Ask three questions: Is the source producing audio? Is the TV sending that audio to the correct output? Is the soundbar listening to that input? Try a built-in TV app and then an HDMI device. If one works, the fault is source-specific. If neither works, concentrate on the TV-to-soundbar link.

Fix HDMI ARC or eARC silence

  • Use the TV port labeled ARC or eARC and the soundbar port labeled HDMI OUT (TV-ARC/eARC).
  • Enable HDMI-CEC on both devices. Brand names include Anynet+, Simplink, BRAVIA Sync, and VIERA Link.
  • Set eARC to Auto when both products support it. If an older ARC device becomes silent, test with eARC off.
  • Start with Digital Audio Out set to Auto or Pass Through. If silence continues, select PCM as a compatibility test.

Fix optical, analog, or Bluetooth sound

For optical, remove the small protective caps, push each connector fully home, select Optical/D.IN, and set the TV to optical output. PCM is the safest test format. For analog, the TV must have an actual audio-out or headphone jack, not an audio input; start with moderate TV volume. For Bluetooth, remove old pairings, put the soundbar in pairing mode, and reconnect from the TV’s audio-device menu.

When a replacement cable helps

Replace a cable only after confirming the correct ports and settings. A damaged or poorly seated cable can cause intermittent or absent audio. You can compare a certified HDMI cable for ARC/eARC or an optical Toslink cable after matching the ports. Our soundbar-to-TV setup guide covers every common connection.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my soundbar on but silent?

The soundbar may be on the wrong input, the TV may still be using its internal speakers, or the audio format may be unsupported. Check those items before resetting anything.

Why does the soundbar work with one app but not another?

The app or source may be sending a format the TV or soundbar cannot pass or decode. Test PCM, then re-enable Auto or Pass Through once the failing link is identified.

Should I factory-reset the soundbar?

Reset only after the connection, input, output, and power-cycle checks fail. Use the exact procedure in the model manual because button combinations differ.
