To learn how to connect a soundbar with RCA cables, identify a genuine red-and-white audio output on the TV and matching analog inputs on the soundbar. Match red to right and white to left, select the analog input, and test at moderate volume. Many newer TVs and soundbars do not include RCA audio ports, so read the labels before buying a cable.
RCA sockets look identical whether they are inputs or outputs. The TV must say Audio Out, Line Out, Monitor Out, or a similar output label. Sockets marked AV In, Component In, or Audio In cannot send sound. The soundbar side must be labeled AUX In, Analog In, Line In, or Audio In.
If the TV has only a headphone jack, use a 3.5mm-to-RCA cable. If it has only optical output and the soundbar has only RCA input, you need an active digital-to-analog converter—not a passive cable. Our port-matching guide helps identify the correct route.
A fixed line output sends a constant level, so use the soundbar remote for volume. A variable audio output changes with the TV volume; set the TV around the middle of its range, then adjust the soundbar. If the sound distorts, lower the TV output. If it is noisy and weak, raise the TV level modestly and reduce the soundbar gain.
If a straightforward cable is appropriate, compare a stereo RCA audio cable. For optical-out TVs feeding an RCA-only soundbar, compare an optical-to-RCA DAC and set the TV’s digital output to PCM. For modern equipment, HDMI or optical may be simpler.
Use only red and white for stereo audio. Yellow carries composite video and is not used by the soundbar.
No. A red-and-white RCA pair carries two-channel analog audio. The soundbar may create a virtual surround effect, but the connection itself is stereo.
No. Component and AV inputs receive signals; they do not output the TV’s program audio.
