A soundbar HDMI passthrough setup sends both video and audio from a source device into the soundbar, then sends the video onward to the TV. The correct path is source HDMI OUT to soundbar HDMI IN, followed by soundbar HDMI OUT (TV ARC/eARC) to a TV HDMI input. This can deliver excellent sound, but every device and cable in the chain must support the video format you want.

When passthrough is the right choice

Use passthrough when the soundbar has a true HDMI input and directly supports the source’s audio format. It can solve cases where a TV will not pass a desired format back to the bar. Connect the source directly to the TV instead when the soundbar cannot pass 4K, HDR10, Dolby Vision, 120 Hz, VRR, or another video feature you use. Apple likewise advises checking both audio and high-quality video compatibility in a direct soundbar path.

Connect the devices in the correct order

  1. Turn off the TV, soundbar, and source.
  2. Connect the streaming player, game console, or disc player HDMI OUT to a regular HDMI IN on the soundbar.
  3. Connect the soundbar HDMI OUT labeled TV ARC or eARC to the TV’s ARC/eARC port when available.
  4. Turn on the TV, then soundbar, then source.
  5. Select the soundbar’s HDMI input. Select the matching HDMI input on the TV.
  6. Enable HDMI-CEC and ARC/eARC if the return channel is also needed for TV apps.
HDMI source to soundbar input and soundbar output to television signal path
The source enters the soundbar first; the soundbar passes video to the TV while playing the audio.

Do not confuse the soundbar’s HDMI IN with HDMI OUT (TV ARC/eARC). If the bar has only an ARC/eARC port and no separate HDMI input, it cannot be placed between a source and the TV. See our soundbar connection guide for another route.

Settings that usually work

  • Set the source video mode to Auto first.
  • Set source audio to Auto, Bitstream, or Passthrough when the soundbar supports the format.
  • Enable enhanced HDMI signal, deep color, or the equivalent for HDR when required.
  • Update TV, source, and soundbar firmware before deeper troubleshooting.

Fix a blank screen or missing sound

Test at 1080p with HDR and high refresh rates off. If the picture returns, the passthrough path lacks bandwidth or format support. Replace one cable at a time with an appropriate certified cable, shorten long runs, and bypass switches or adapters. If video works but surround sound does not, confirm the source is connected to the soundbar input and that the soundbar reports the expected format.

Useful hardware

If testing identifies a cable limitation, compare a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. If the soundbar lacks enough inputs, compare an HDMI switch matched to your video format.

Frequently asked questions

Does HDMI passthrough work when the soundbar is off?

Only if the model supports standby passthrough and that option is enabled.

Why did Dolby Vision disappear?

The soundbar, a cable, or an intermediate device may not support that format. Connect the source directly to the TV to confirm.

Is passthrough the same as ARC?

No. Passthrough moves a source signal through the soundbar toward the TV. ARC sends TV audio back to the soundbar.
