To enable Dolby Atmos from an Xbox Series X to a soundbar, set the console to HDMI audio, choose Bitstream out, then select Dolby Atmos for home theater when that option is available. Atmos only works when the Xbox, the TV or soundbar connection path, and the soundbar all support it. A single older ARC connection or an incorrect TV audio setting can reduce the signal to stereo or standard Dolby Digital.
On Xbox Series X, open Settings > General > Volume & audio output. Under Speaker audio, select HDMI audio. This tells the console to send game and app audio through the HDMI connection rather than treating the television speakers as the final destination.
Next, find HDMI audio format and choose Bitstream out. Once Bitstream out is active, you can select a bitstream format. Choose Dolby Atmos for home theater if the option is offered and the soundbar supports it. Depending on your Xbox setup, the Dolby Access app may be needed to enable or confirm Atmos. If Xbox does not offer Atmos, do not force it; first verify the cable route and your soundbar’s capability.
Bitstream out allows the Xbox to send a Dolby audio stream for decoding by the connected soundbar or receiver. This is often the correct choice when the goal is Dolby Atmos. If the Xbox is set to stereo uncompressed or another format, the soundbar cannot magically reconstruct Atmos from that simpler signal.
Bitstream out does not guarantee Atmos by itself. It must be paired with the correct Dolby setting and an HDMI path that passes it. Test using an Atmos-supported game or a streaming title that clearly identifies its audio format. Then check the soundbar’s display or app to see the format it is actually receiving.
The simplest path is often Xbox → TV → soundbar, with the soundbar connected to the TV’s HDMI eARC port. eARC provides the best chance of carrying higher-bandwidth audio formats back to the soundbar. Set the TV audio output to eARC, Receiver, or External Speakers, and choose Pass-Through, Bitstream, or Auto if those choices appear.
A second option is Xbox → soundbar HDMI input → TV. This can bypass a TV that has limited ARC audio pass-through, but the soundbar must support the video features you want, such as 4K at your preferred refresh rate, HDR, or gaming features. Before choosing this route, read Should You Connect Devices to the TV or the Soundbar?.
An ARC-only TV is the most common limitation. Standard ARC can handle many Dolby Digital and Dolby Digital Plus situations, but it is not as capable as eARC for all high-bandwidth formats. A soundbar may support Atmos, yet still receive only Dolby Digital or stereo because the television in the middle cannot pass the intended signal.
Also check whether the soundbar has an actual HDMI input and whether its video pass-through supports your Xbox display settings. A soundbar with an older HDMI pass-through section may limit picture features even when its audio capability is strong. In that case, connecting Xbox to the TV first and using eARC may be the better compromise.

The setting enables the system’s ability to output Atmos; it does not make every game soundtrack an Atmos mix. Some games use surround sound, stereo, or their own spatial-audio implementation. A soundbar display that shows Dolby Digital, PCM, or another format for a particular title may be normal. Test several known compatible titles and apps before changing settings repeatedly.
Headsets and party chat are separate from home-theater HDMI audio. Disconnect a headset during your first test so it does not redirect chat or game sound. If you are replacing an older cable, compare HDMI 2.1 cable options for gaming and choose a length appropriate for your installation.
Use Dolby Digital instead of Atmos when your older television or soundbar cannot maintain a stable Atmos connection. A reliable Dolby Digital surround signal is better than repeated dropouts, silence, or a broken HDMI handshake. You can revisit Atmos later after an eARC-capable TV, soundbar, or connection path upgrade.

Set Speaker audio to HDMI audio, select Bitstream out, then choose Dolby Atmos for home theater when the option is available. The soundbar and HDMI path must support Atmos.
The Xbox may be detecting a TV, soundbar, cable, or HDMI route that does not report Atmos capability. Check the soundbar connection, the TV eARC setting, and the audio output mode before assuming the console is at fault.
Sometimes, but it depends on the television and soundbar. eARC is the more dependable route. On an older ARC system, Dolby Digital may be the practical and stable choice.
