Cable box remote used to select Dolby Digital instead of PCM for a soundbar

For most cable-box-to-soundbar systems, choose Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Auto, or Bitstream when the menu offers it. PCM can restore sound in a compatibility problem, but it often sends simpler stereo audio and may limit surround or Atmos delivery. The correct choice depends on whether the cable box connects to the TV first or directly to the soundbar.

Choose Dolby Digital first

Open the cable box Settings, Audio, or Device Settings menu. The choice may be called Dolby Digital, Dolby Audio, Surround Sound, HDMI Audio, Auto, or Bitstream. Select the best Dolby or Auto/Bitstream option that the box offers. This allows the cable box to send a compatible surround soundtrack instead of decoding it to basic PCM before the soundbar receives it.

Many live channels are stereo, so the soundbar may still display PCM or Stereo on certain programs. Test with a movie channel, on-demand title, or event known to carry Dolby audio before deciding that the setting has failed.

Why PCM can limit surround sound

PCM is decoded audio. It is safe and often useful, especially when an older TV or soundbar produces silence with Dolby selected. However, if the cable box or TV converts the source to two-channel PCM, the soundbar cannot recover the original surround data. PCM is therefore a troubleshooting fallback, not normally the first choice when you want the best surround sound available.

If PCM is the only setting that works, keep it temporarily while you inspect the rest of the HDMI path. The issue may be the television’s pass-through setting, an ARC-only limitation, or a cable that needs replacement—not the cable box itself.

Check the TV sound output too

When the cable box plugs into the television, the TV has to send audio back to the soundbar through HDMI ARC or eARC. In the TV menu, choose ARC/eARC, Receiver, or External Speakers. Then use Pass-Through, Bitstream, Auto, or a similarly named setting rather than forcing the television to PCM. This keeps the box’s Dolby signal available to the soundbar where the TV supports it.

Use this cable-box audio test

  1. Set the cable box to Dolby Digital, Dolby Audio, Auto, or Bitstream.
  2. Set the TV to external speakers and ARC/eARC, with Pass-Through or Auto enabled if available.
  3. Play a known surround program and check the soundbar display.
  4. If there is no sound, switch the box briefly to PCM. If sound returns, the basic connection works but Dolby compatibility needs attention.
  5. Restart the HDMI handshake: power off the cable box, TV, and soundbar, unplug them briefly, reconnect HDMI, and turn on the TV first.

A dependable high-speed HDMI cable is worth using during the test. Loose or aging cables can cause dropouts or a failed format handshake.

Can a cable box deliver Dolby Atmos?

Most cable channels do not provide Atmos as consistently as discs or streaming apps. A Dolby setting is still the correct choice because it supports standard Dolby surround when available. If the soundbar never reports Atmos from cable but works with a streaming device, that may reflect the program and provider rather than an equipment failure. When PCM is the right permanent choice

Leave PCM selected if Dolby produces repeated silence, distortion, or unstable audio after you have checked the TV output, HDMI ports, and cable. This is common with older ARC televisions. PCM gives reliable audio, even though it may not preserve surround sound. If you later upgrade to eARC, test the Dolby setting again.

Frequently asked questions

Should a cable box be set to Dolby Digital or PCM?

Choose Dolby Digital, Dolby Audio, Auto, or Bitstream first. Use PCM when the Dolby setting does not provide stable sound after you have checked the TV and HDMI connection.

Why does PCM give only stereo sound?

PCM can convert the incoming soundtrack before it reaches the soundbar. If it is two-channel PCM, the soundbar receives stereo rather than the original surround data.

Why is my soundbar not getting surround sound from cable?

Check the cable-box format, TV ARC/eARC setting, TV pass-through mode, and the program itself. Not every cable program includes surround sound.
