Choosing between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi affects speed, range, reliability, and whether older smart-home devices can connect. Neither band is always better. The right choice depends on where the device is located and what it needs to do.

Use 5 GHz when a device is close to the router and needs higher speed for streaming, gaming, downloads, or video calls. Use 2.4 GHz when a device is farther away, behind several walls, or is an older smart-home product such as a camera, doorbell, bulb, plug, or printer.

What 2.4 GHz does well

2.4 GHz travels farther and passes through walls more effectively than 5 GHz. It is often the best choice for a garage camera, outdoor doorbell, basement sensor, or printer at the far end of a home. Its disadvantage is congestion: many neighboring networks, Bluetooth devices, and household products share this band. That can reduce speed and create intermittent connections.

What 5 GHz does well

5 GHz usually delivers more speed and has more available channels. It is the better choice for a TV streaming in 4K, a game console, a computer, or a phone near the router. Its shorter range means performance can drop sharply through dense walls, floors, brick, or large appliances.

Newer Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E equipment may offer additional bands, but the basic rule remains: higher-frequency Wi-Fi favors speed; lower-frequency Wi-Fi favors coverage.

Why smart-home devices often need 2.4 GHz

Many smart-home products are designed only for 2.4 GHz. During setup, a phone connected to 5 GHz may sometimes prevent the app from finding the device. If setup fails, temporarily connect the phone to the 2.4 GHz network, then retry. Do not assume the product is defective until you have checked its supported Wi-Fi band.
