Seeing a “USB device not recognized” message does not automatically mean the device has failed. Windows may have lost contact with a port, cable, hub, or driver. Start with the simple physical checks below, then use Device Manager only if the device still fails on a direct connection.
If a powered hub fits your setup, compare powered USB hubs on Amazon.

Note whether the device worked on this computer before, whether it works on another computer, and whether the problem began after an update, new hub, dock, or cable. That comparison helps separate a device fault from a port, cable, driver, or power issue. Test only one change at a time and avoid repeatedly reconnecting a device that becomes hot, damaged, or intermittently disconnects. If the computer stalls during startup after a device change, use the related startup guide before making broader Windows changes.

Disconnect the device and do not keep testing it if a port feels hot, smells burnt, sparks, or has visible damage. For a USB drive holding important files, avoid formatting it or repeatedly reconnecting it; a data-recovery professional may be the safer next step.
Windows shows this message when it cannot communicate reliably with the device. Common causes include a loose or damaged connection, insufficient power, an incompatible adapter, or a driver that needs to be refreshed.
Reinstalling the driver for a USB controller or external device does not erase files stored on the device. Do not choose any format or erase option while troubleshooting.
