Blu-ray player remote used to turn Secondary Audio off for Dolby Atmos

If your Blu-ray player is connected to a Dolby Atmos soundbar but the soundbar only shows Dolby Digital, PCM, or no Atmos at all, check the player’s Secondary Audio setting. For most Atmos disc playback, turn Secondary Audio Off and set the player’s digital-audio output to Bitstream. Secondary audio can force the player to mix menu sounds, commentary, or picture-in-picture audio into the main soundtrack, which may prevent the original Atmos bitstream from reaching the soundbar.

What secondary audio does

Secondary audio is an extra soundtrack layer. A Blu-ray or Ultra HD Blu-ray disc may use it for menu clicks, picture-in-picture commentary, bonus features, or another supplemental track. When this feature is enabled, the player may mix that extra audio with the movie soundtrack before sending it over HDMI.

That mix can be useful when you specifically want a bonus feature. The tradeoff is that the player may no longer be able to send the untouched Dolby Atmos or DTS:X bitstream that the soundbar expects. Instead, it may output a compatible but less advanced format. This is why an otherwise correct Atmos setup can suddenly show standard Dolby Digital when a player menu setting is changed.

Turn secondary audio off for the main movie

Open the Blu-ray player’s Audio, Digital Audio Output, or HDMI Audio menu. Look for names such as Secondary Audio, BD Audio Mix, Audio Mix, BonusView Audio, or Secondary Sound. Set that option to Off for normal movie playback.

Then set the player’s primary digital output to Bitstream, Bitstream Direct, or a similarly named option. Avoid PCM or PCM Downmix when your goal is to deliver the disc’s Atmos soundtrack to the soundbar. The exact menu wording varies by player, but the goal is consistent: let the soundbar decode the original compatible bitstream.

Use the right HDMI connection

The player setting is only part of the system. If the Blu-ray player connects to the TV first, the television must pass the audio back through its HDMI ARC or eARC connection. eARC is generally the better path for higher-bandwidth formats. In the TV sound menu, select HDMI ARC/eARC, Receiver, or External Speakers and use Pass-Through, Bitstream, or Auto when available.

If your TV does not pass the format reliably, connect the player directly to a soundbar HDMI input if the soundbar supports the video features you need. A five-step Atmos check

  1. Choose an Atmos disc. Check the disc case or on-screen audio menu for Dolby Atmos; not every Blu-ray or title includes it.
  2. Turn Secondary Audio or BD Audio Mix off. This is the key setting when you want the player to preserve the main bitstream.
  3. Select Bitstream. Use Bitstream or Bitstream Direct rather than PCM for the player’s HDMI output.
  4. Confirm the soundbar input and display. Use the soundbar HDMI input or TV/ARC input required by your cable route, then look for Dolby Atmos in its display or app.
  5. Restart the HDMI handshake. Power off the player, TV, and soundbar; unplug them briefly; reconnect securely; then power on the TV first.

Use a reliable Ultra High Speed HDMI cable when your system also carries 4K HDR video. A weak cable can cause video or audio dropouts that resemble a format problem.

When it is appropriate to turn secondary audio on

Turn it on only when you deliberately want the supplemental audio, such as a picture-in-picture commentary or special-feature track. Afterward, turn it back off before testing the main movie soundtrack. This gives the player the best chance to output the full original audio format.

Do not assume the soundbar is defective because its display changes after enabling a disc feature. Other settings that can limit Atmos

Some players also have a separate downmix, audio re-encode, dynamic-range, or HDMI-output option. A downmix setting can reduce multichannel sound to stereo. Audio re-encode can change how the player packages the soundtrack. Leave these at Auto or Bitstream-compatible defaults unless you are solving a specific problem.
