When a computer won’t turn on, the problem may be as simple as a loose power cable, a switched-off surge protector, a drained laptop battery, or a display that is off rather than a failed computer. Start with the safest external checks first. Do not open the case, and stop immediately if you notice a burning smell, smoke, liquid damage, unusual heat, or electrical damage.
If you need a replacement for a worn external cable after confirming the computer’s required connector type, compare computer power cables.

Before buying a replacement part, separate a true power problem from a display problem. No lights, no fan movement, and no charging indicator point to the outlet, cable, charger, battery, or internal power path. Lights or fans with a dark screen point more often to the monitor, cable, input selection, or a startup issue. Write down what happens during one deliberate power attempt, including any lights, tones, or blinking pattern. That record is more useful than repeated restarts and makes a repair conversation much easier.

Stop and seek qualified repair help if you smell burning, see smoke or sparks, find a swollen battery, notice a damaged power connector, hear repeated clicking from inside the computer, or suspect liquid exposure. Do not open a power supply, charger, or battery pack. These parts can carry hazards even when the computer is unplugged.
A computer with no lights, sounds, or fan activity may not be receiving power. Start by checking the outlet, surge protector, cable, charger, and battery connection before assuming an internal part has failed.
If lights or fans come on, the computer may be running while the monitor, input selection, video cable, or startup process needs attention. Check the display separately and then follow the site’s monitor and startup troubleshooting guidance.
One deliberate attempt after each check is enough. Repeated attempts can make it harder to identify what changed and are not appropriate if there are signs of heat, damage, liquid, or an electrical fault.
