To learn how to connect a soundbar with an AUX cable, run a stereo 3.5mm cable from the TV’s headphone or Audio Out jack to the soundbar’s AUX In or Analog In jack. Select the soundbar’s AUX input, set the TV at a moderate volume, and fine-tune both levels for clean sound. This simple analog method works well with many older TVs.
A 3.5mm socket can be an input, an output, or a service connection. On the TV, look for Headphones, Audio Out, or a headphone symbol. On the soundbar, look for AUX In, Analog In, or Line In. Do not use microphone, service, or IR sockets even if a plug fits.
AUX carries two-channel analog sound. It does not carry HDMI control or advanced digital surround formats. If both products support a digital connection, review our soundbar connection comparison before choosing analog.
Most headphone outputs are variable, meaning the TV volume affects the signal entering the soundbar. If the TV is too low, the soundbar may add hiss as you turn it up. If the TV is too high, loud passages may distort. Start around the midpoint, raise the TV until the signal is clear, then use the soundbar for everyday adjustment. If the TV offers Fixed or Variable output, Fixed usually means the soundbar controls all volume.
For matching 3.5mm ports, compare a shielded stereo AUX cable. If the soundbar has red-and-white inputs instead, use a 3.5mm-to-RCA stereo cable. For a higher-capability option, see how to connect with HDMI ARC.
AUX avoids wireless pairing and may reduce delay, but both are normally stereo. Bluetooth removes the signal cable; AUX is often simpler and more consistent.
Many TVs automatically mute their internal speakers when a headphone plug is detected. This is normal behavior.
Use a stereo TRS cable with two insulating rings. A mono plug may lose a channel or produce incorrect sound.
