To understand how to connect a soundbar with Wi-Fi, separate two tasks: joining the soundbar to your home network and selecting it as an audio destination. Most models use the manufacturer’s mobile app for setup. TV sound over Wi-Fi usually works only within a compatible brand or ecosystem, so confirm support before replacing a cable.

What you need

  • A Wi-Fi-enabled soundbar and a supported phone or tablet.
  • The manufacturer’s current setup app and an account if required.
  • Your Wi-Fi name and password.
  • The phone, soundbar, and compatible TV on the same local network.

Wi-Fi can support app control, music services, multiroom playback, and some brand-specific wireless TV-audio features. It is not a universal substitute for HDMI. Review the tradeoffs in our soundbar connection comparison.

Connect the soundbar to Wi-Fi

  1. Install the app named in the soundbar manual, such as SmartThings or the maker’s audio app.
  2. Connect your phone to the home Wi-Fi network you want the soundbar to use.
  3. Power on the soundbar and select Wi-Fi or Network mode if the manual requires it.
  4. In the app, choose Add Device, Add Speaker, or the plus symbol.
  5. Select the soundbar, approve local-network and Bluetooth permissions used during discovery, and enter the Wi-Fi credentials.
  6. Wait for the app to confirm connection, then install any offered firmware update.
  7. Name the room and test music playback from the app.

Route TV sound over Wi-Fi

Open the TV’s Sound Output or Speaker menu and look for the soundbar, Wi-Fi Speaker, Wireless Speaker, or the brand’s named feature. Select it and test a built-in TV app. If the soundbar appears in its mobile app but not on the TV, the two products may not support Wi-Fi TV audio together. In that case, connect them using HDMI ARC or optical audio while leaving Wi-Fi enabled for music and control.

Fix Wi-Fi discovery and dropouts

  • Turn off cellular data or VPN temporarily during setup.
  • Avoid guest Wi-Fi and client-isolation modes that prevent devices from communicating.
  • Give the app local-network, Bluetooth, and location permissions it explicitly requests.
  • Restart the phone, soundbar, and router, then retry near the router.
  • If the soundbar supports only 2.4 GHz, use a compatible network during setup.
  • Update the app, TV, and soundbar firmware before resetting the soundbar.

Useful network upgrades

Do not buy hardware until placement and settings have been checked. For a weak room, compare a mesh Wi-Fi system. If your soundbar supports Ethernet, a Cat 6 Ethernet cable may offer a steadier network link, though it does not replace the required TV-audio connection on every model.

Frequently asked questions

Does a Wi-Fi soundbar need Bluetooth?

Not for ongoing Wi-Fi playback, but many setup apps use Bluetooth temporarily to discover and configure the soundbar.

Can any smart TV send audio to any Wi-Fi soundbar?

No. Wi-Fi TV-audio features are usually ecosystem-specific. Confirm the supported brands, models, and app requirements.

Why does music work but TV sound does not?

The network connection may support streaming and app control without supporting TV-audio transport. Use HDMI ARC/eARC or optical for the TV link.
