If a cable box, streaming device, or game console is connected through a soundbar and the TV shows no picture, the soundbar may still be receiving power and audio correctly. The missing image is usually a video-path problem: the source is connected to the wrong HDMI port, the cable cannot carry the selected video format, the TV is on the wrong input, or the devices have failed an HDMI handshake.
For HDMI passthrough, the source device connects to an HDMI IN port on the soundbar. The soundbar’s HDMI OUT or HDMI TV/ARC port connects to an HDMI (or respective ARC) input on the TV. The TV must be switched to that same HDMI input. If the source is connected directly to the TV instead, passthrough settings on the soundbar are not involved.
Start by tracing each cable with the equipment powered off. Do not rely on a cable’s position alone; labels such as HDMI IN, HDMI OUT, TV, ARC, and eARC matter.
On the TV, choose the input where the soundbar’s HDMI output is connected. If the soundbar has more than one HDMI input, use its Input or Source button to choose the input that matches the cable box, console, or streaming device.
A soundbar may play audio from a previous input while the TV is waiting for a different video source. Switch slowly, wait a few seconds after each selection, and watch for a picture before changing another setting.
Turn off the source, soundbar, and TV. Unplug the HDMI cable from the source to the soundbar and the cable from the soundbar to the TV. Inspect each connector for a bent shell, loose fit, or damage. Reconnect them firmly, then turn on the TV first, the soundbar second, and the source device last.
This order gives the TV time to announce its video capabilities before the source starts sending a signal. It often corrects a black screen caused by a failed HDCP or HDMI handshake.
Connect the same source device directly to the TV with the same HDMI cable. If the picture appears, the source and cable are probably working and the soundbar’s passthrough path or settings need attention. If the picture still does not appear, focus on the source device, TV input, or cable instead.
This one test quickly divides the problem into two paths. It also prevents spending time factory-resetting a soundbar when the actual problem is a cable box set to an unsupported resolution.
Older soundbars may pass 1080p video but not 4K HDR, 120 Hz gaming, Dolby Vision, or a high-bandwidth color setting. In the source device’s video settings, temporarily select 1080p at 60 Hz and disable HDR or enhanced color output. If the picture returns, the soundbar may not support the original format through its HDMI input.
Check the soundbar manual for its maximum passthrough capability. If it cannot pass the format you want, connect the source directly to the TV and send audio back to the soundbar through ARC, eARC, or optical.
Very old, damaged, or low-quality HDMI cables can work for basic audio yet fail with 4K HDR video. Use a certified High Speed cable for standard 4K 60 Hz equipment, or an Ultra High Speed cable when your devices require higher bandwidth. Keep the run as short as practical and avoid adapters during testing.

Check for TV, soundbar, and source-device updates after the basic connection tests. Manufacturers sometimes correct HDMI compatibility problems through firmware. A normal power reset—unplugging all three devices for one minute—is safer than starting with a factory reset.
