What HDMI ARC actually does

Most HDMI connections carry picture and sound from a source toward a TV. ARC adds a return path so the TV can send audio in the opposite direction to a soundbar or audio/video receiver. That returning audio can come from the TV’s built-in streaming apps, over-the-air tuner, or another source connected to the TV.

The practical benefit is fewer cables. Without ARC, a typical installation may use HDMI for picture plus a separate optical cable for TV audio. With ARC, one HDMI cable between the correct TV and soundbar ports can handle the return-audio connection.
