If your soundbar is connected with an optical cable but there is no sound, the problem is usually an output setting, the selected soundbar input, or the cable connection—not a failed soundbar. Work through the checks below in order. They apply to most TV and soundbar brands.

Start with this quick optical-cable checklist

  1. Make sure the cable runs from the TV’s Digital Audio Out / Optical Out port to the soundbar’s Optical In port.
  2. Select the optical input on the soundbar. It may be called Optical, D.IN, TV, Digital, or Source.
  3. In the TV audio menu, select External speakers, Audio system, or Optical instead of TV speakers.
  4. Set the TV’s digital audio output to PCM as a test. Once sound returns, try Auto or Dolby Digital only if your soundbar supports it.
  5. Turn the TV and soundbar off, unplug both for one minute, then reconnect and power the TV on before the soundbar.

1. Check the direction and seating of the optical cable

Optical audio is one-way: the television’s optical output must feed the soundbar’s optical input. Remove the small protective caps, then push each connector straight in until it is fully seated. A gentle red glow at the TV end is normal; never stare into it. Do not sharply bend, pinch, or force the cable.

If the cable is loose, damaged, or too short to route cleanly, replace it with a properly rated Toslink optical audio cable.

2. Change the TV audio-output setting

Every TV labels this menu a little differently. Look under Settings > Sound for options such as Speakers, Sound Output, Audio Output, Digital Audio Out, or Expert Settings. Choose the external audio device. If the TV gives you a choice between variable and fixed output, fixed is generally the right choice for optical.

Then play a familiar program and raise the soundbar volume. Some TVs mute their built-in speakers automatically; others require you to confirm the switch.

3. Set the digital format to PCM first

PCM is the most useful diagnostic setting because it is widely compatible. If switching to PCM restores sound, the original format was likely unsupported by the soundbar or being passed through incorrectly by the TV. You can then test Auto or Dolby Digital with content that is known to carry that format.

4. Isolate the TV, source, and cable

Try more than one app or input. If only one cable box, game console, or disc player is silent, its own audio menu may be sending a format the TV cannot pass through over optical. Connect video sources to the TV, then let the TV send audio to the soundbar. This is also worth checking after connecting a Blu-ray player to a TV.

Next, test another optical cable if you have one. A cable can fail without visible damage. Avoid adapters unless the product documentation specifically supports them.

5. Restart the system in the right order

Power-related handshakes are more common with HDMI, but a full restart can still clear a TV or soundbar that has selected the wrong input. Unplug the TV and soundbar for 60 seconds. Reconnect the optical cable. Turn on the TV, start a program, and then turn on the soundbar and select its optical input.

When optical is the wrong connection

Optical works well for basic stereo and many Dolby Digital setups, but it does not carry every advanced format or the TV-control features that HDMI ARC/eARC can provide. If your TV and soundbar both have ARC or eARC ports, consult both manuals before changing connections. Do not move a cable into a similarly shaped but incorrect port.

Why does the optical cable show a red light but there is no sound?

The red light only confirms that the TV is sending an optical signal. The soundbar still needs the correct input selected, and the TV must be set to send a compatible audio format to external speakers.

Should I set my TV to PCM or Dolby Digital?

Use PCM to troubleshoot because it is broadly compatible. If PCM works and your soundbar supports Dolby Digital, test Auto or Dolby Digital afterward with compatible content.

Can an optical cable control soundbar volume with my TV remote?

Usually not by itself. Optical carries audio, not HDMI-CEC control commands. Some TVs and soundbars can use IR learning or universal-remote programming instead.
