If your soundbar shows Stereo, PCM, or LPCM when you expected Dolby Digital or surround sound, it may be receiving exactly what the TV or source is sending. The fix is to trace the complete audio path: content, source device, TV, connection, and soundbar capability.
PCM (or LPCM) is uncompressed digital audio. It is not automatically an error and can sound excellent in stereo. The issue is whether your equipment and content should be delivering a different surround format, and whether every device in the chain supports it.
Many shows, channels, and apps are stereo. Choose known surround content and then inspect the source device’s sound setting. A console, streaming box, or Blu-ray player may be set to PCM, stereo, or a format the TV cannot pass through. When connecting a player, review our steps for how to connect a Blu-ray player to a TV.
HDMI ARC and eARC can carry more formats than optical, depending on the equipment. Optical is reliable for basic audio and many Dolby Digital systems, but it does not support every advanced format. If you are using optical, see our optical-cable troubleshooting guide before moving connections.
Use a properly certified cable when equipment supports eARC. You can compare Ultra High Speed HDMI cables; as an Amazon Associate, AAHE may earn from qualifying purchases.
Names vary, but look for Digital Audio Output, HDMI eARC Mode, Pass-Through, Audio Format, or Expert Sound settings. Start with Auto or Pass-Through if the soundbar supports the desired format. If you lose audio, return to PCM to prove the connection works, then check manuals for compatible formats.
A soundbar app may display the format it is receiving. Bose, for example, documents format displays such as LPCM, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, and Dolby Atmos for supported products; the actual options remain model-specific.
Two-channel PCM is normal for stereo content. A soundbar may create a wider effect using a sound mode, but it cannot turn every stereo recording into true discrete surround. If dialogue is the real problem, use our dialogue-clarity guide instead of chasing a format label.
Do not buy an audio extractor as a first step. These products can solve a specific compatibility problem but can also limit formats, introduce delay, or complicate HDMI handshakes. If you know your TV lacks the needed output, compare eARC audio extractors only after checking source, TV, and soundbar compatibility. As an Amazon Associate, AAHE may earn from qualifying purchases.

No. PCM is a valid audio format. It only becomes a concern if it prevents a format your equipment and content should support.
Apps, titles, device settings, subscription levels, and TV pass-through support can all differ. Test with multiple known surround titles.
Generally no. Check your product manuals; advanced formats usually require compatible HDMI ARC/eARC equipment.
