Why knowing the difference between ARC and eARC is relevant?

ARC, short for Audio Return Channel, lets a TV send sound back to a soundbar through the same HDMI cable used for video and control. It is convenient for built-in streaming apps, antenna TV, and sources connected to the TV.

eARC, or enhanced Audio Return Channel, has more bandwidth and stronger audio-format support. It can carry higher-quality formats such as uncompressed multichannel PCM and some lossless surround formats when the TV, soundbar, source, content, and settings all support them. eARC also improves device-to-device capability reporting, but it does not make incompatible equipment gain new features.

If your television has an HDMI port labeled eARC or ARC/eARC, while your soundbar has only HDMI ARC, the short answer is reassuring: the two devices are usually compatible, but, with limitations. Connect the TV’s ARC/eARC port to the soundbar’s HDMI ARC or HDMI OUT (TV-ARC) port with one HDMI cable. The connection then works at the level both devices share: ARC.

Are eARC and ARC compatible?

For example, a high-bandwidth lossless soundtrack may be converted to a format the ARC soundbar can accept, or the TV may offer a lower-bandwidth output option.

How to connect the two devices

1. Turn off the TV and soundbar.
2. Find the TV HDMI port labeled ARC, eARC, or ARC/eARC. Do not use an ordinary HDMI input.
3. Connect that port to the soundbar port labeled HDMI ARC, HDMI OUT, or TV-ARC.
4. Turn on the TV, then the soundbar.
5. In the TV audio menu, choose External Speaker, Receiver, HDMI ARC, or eARC.
6. Enable HDMI-CEC. Depending on the TV, it may be called Anynet+, Bravia Sync, Simplink, VIERA Link, or another name.
7. Set digital audio output to Auto or Pass Through. If you hear no sound, test PCM to isolate a format-compatibility problem.

Use the right HDMI cable

A certified High Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet is usually adequate for ARC. For equipment intended to use eARC features, choose a properly certified cable and keep it as short as practical.
