Apple TV Sound Settings for a Soundbar: Auto, Change Format, or Dolby Atmos?

Apple TV 4K normally makes the best audio decision automatically, but a soundbar can lose surround sound or Dolby Atmos when one device in the HDMI chain is set incorrectly. Start with Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Format. For most current soundbars, leave Change Format off and let Apple TV use Auto.

What Auto does on Apple TV 4K

With Change Format off, Apple TV analyzes the soundbar or TV capabilities it receives over HDMI and chooses a compatible output. It can send multichannel LPCM for many soundtracks and use Dolby Atmos when the title, app, Apple TV model, subscription, TV connection, and soundbar all support it. This is not a lower-quality setting; it is Apple TV’s normal recommended mode.

Use Auto first whenever you have a soundbar connected with HDMI ARC or eARC. If you connect Apple TV to the soundbar first, the soundbar reports its capabilities directly. If Apple TV goes into the TV first, the TV must pass the supported formats back through ARC or eARC.

When to use Change Format

Change Format is a troubleshooting tool, not an upgrade switch. Turn it on only when Auto produces silence, intermittent sound, a wrong format, or a TV that cannot pass the chosen format. Then choose Dolby Digital 5.1 to test a widely compatible surround format. If Dolby Digital works but Auto does not, the weak link is often the TV audio-output setting, ARC/eARC handshake, or an older soundbar.

Forcing Dolby Digital can also prevent higher-quality formats that Auto could otherwise use. After testing, return Change Format to Off unless it is the only stable option for your equipment.

How Dolby Atmos should be set

Open Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Format and look for Dolby Atmos. When available, set it to Auto. An Atmos option appearing on Apple TV proves only that the Apple TV sees some compatible path; the program also needs an Atmos soundtrack. Start with a known Atmos title and inspect the soundbar display or companion app.

Connection path matters

An Apple TV plugged into the soundbar can be useful if the TV has limited ARC support, but the soundbar must also pass the video features you use. If you need 4K/120 Hz, HDR, or gaming features through another device, connecting the Apple TV to the TV and returning audio through eARC is often simpler. Use the HDMI ports labelled ARC or eARC, not an ordinary HDMI input.

A quick troubleshooting order

1. Set Change Format to Off and Audio Format to Auto.
2. Set Dolby Atmos to Auto when offered.
3. Confirm TV digital output is Pass Through, Bitstream, Dolby Audio, or Auto.
4. Play a known Dolby or Atmos title.
5. Test Dolby Digital 5.1 only if Auto fails.
6. Restart Apple TV, TV, and soundbar after changing HDMI settings.

Do not confuse volume with format

Check the soundbar display after each test

Use one familiar program while testing so you can tell whether the format changed. A soundbar may report PCM, Multichannel PCM, Dolby Audio, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, or Atmos. Multichannel PCM is not automatically a fault; it can be the normal result of Apple TV decoding audio before sending it. The important question is whether you hear the expected channels reliably.

After changing a setting, restart the Apple TV, television, and soundbar in that order. HDMI capability information can remain cached until the devices reconnect.
