A weak Wi-Fi signal can make a fast internet plan feel unusable. Video buffers in one bedroom, calls freeze at the kitchen table, and a smart TV works only when nobody else is online. The good news is that weak coverage is usually a radio-placement problem, not a reason to buy the most expensive router immediately.

This guide starts with quick tests, then walks through router placement, interference, band and channel choices, extenders, mesh systems, and wired access points. Make one change at a time and test in the same locations so you know what actually helped.

First, confirm that the signal is the problem

Stand near the router and run a speed test, then repeat it in the problem room using the same device. If performance is strong beside the router but poor farther away, coverage is the likely issue. Also test more than one device. One old phone or laptop may have a weaker radio, outdated driver, or damaged antenna. A problem affecting only one device is not a whole-home coverage problem.

1. Put the router where radio waves can travel

Place the router close to the center of the area where Wi-Fi is used, in the open, and several feet above the floor. A shelf is usually better than the floor, a metal cabinet, or the back corner of a utility closet. Thick masonry, concrete, mirrors, aquariums, appliances, and metal ductwork can weaken or reflect the signal.

Keep the router away from microwave ovens, cordless-phone bases, baby monitors, Bluetooth hubs, and large televisions when possible. Do not stack it directly on a modem or other hot equipment. Router vents need space, because overheating can reduce reliability.

Many routers use external antennas. If the manufacturer does not specify an arrangement, try one vertical and one angled horizontally; differently oriented client devices may respond better. Test before and after rather than assuming an antenna position is best.

2. Choose the right Wi-Fi band

The 2.4 GHz band generally reaches farther and passes through walls better, but it is slower and more crowded. The 5 GHz band usually provides faster service at shorter range. Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 equipment can also use 6 GHz, which offers clean, fast channels but the shortest practical indoor reach.

  • Use 2.4 GHz for distant rooms, many smart-home devices, and modest-bandwidth connections.

  • Use 6 GHz for compatible devices close to an access point when you want maximum local performance.

3. Reduce channel congestion

Nearby networks share airtime. A router’s automatic channel selection is a sensible first choice, but it may not reassess often. Restarting the router can trigger a new selection. On 2.4 GHz, channels 1, 6, and 11 are the usual non-overlapping choices in North America. Choose the least crowded one rather than an arbitrary channel.

Keep channel width conservative in crowded areas: a wider channel can be faster in clean conditions but can also overlap more neighbors. Update the router’s firmware before changing advanced radio settings, and record the original values so you can undo an unhelpful change.

4. Decide whether you need an extender, mesh, or wired access point

If better placement does not cover the home, add coverage deliberately.

  • Wi-Fi extender: inexpensive and useful for one small dead zone, but placement matters. Put it where it still receives a good router signal—not inside the dead zone.
  • Mesh Wi-Fi: easier for multiple rooms or floors. Place nodes in open areas about halfway toward weak zones. Too many nodes can add interference rather than help.
  • Wired access point: the most dependable choice when Ethernet is available. It gives the remote radio a full-speed wired connection back to the router.

Device placement matters too. A streaming box hidden behind a metal television can struggle even when a phone in front of the screen works. A short HDMI extension or relocating the device may improve reception.

When replacing the router makes sense

Replacement is reasonable when the router no longer receives security updates, crashes frequently, lacks the capacity for your household, or cannot support the internet speed and client features you use. Before replacing it, confirm that the modem and service are healthy and that an Ethernet-connected test reaches the expected speed. Why is Wi-Fi weak in only one room?

The path may cross dense walls, metal, appliances, or plumbing, or the room may sit at the edge of the router’s range. Move the router, move the device, or place an access point or mesh node before the obstruction.

Will faster internet service improve Wi-Fi range?

No. A faster plan can raise the speed available at the router, but it does not make the router’s radio travel farther. Coverage and internet capacity are separate problems.

Should I use 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz for a distant room?
