Quick answer: “Wi-Fi connected but no internet” usually means your device has joined the local wireless network, but that network is not reaching the wider internet. The fault may be limited to one device, affect the router or modem, or originate with the internet service provider. The fastest way to narrow it down is to test another website, another device, the provider’s status, and—if available—a wired Ethernet connection.

Before restarting equipment: A modem or router restart temporarily disconnects every device. Confirm that no one is relying on the connection for an internet-based home phone, medical or accessibility equipment, monitored cameras, security controls, work, or another urgent need. Do not press a recessed Reset button; that can erase network settings.

Start With This 60-Second Test

  1. Try two unrelated websites or apps on the affected device.
  2. Try the same connection on another phone, computer, tablet, or smart TV.
  3. If possible, turn off Wi-Fi on a phone and use mobile data to check your provider’s official service-status page.
  4. Record the lights showing on the modem, router, or combined gateway before unplugging anything.

If only one device fails, start with that device. If every device fails, concentrate on the modem, router, gateway, cabling, account, or provider service.



1. Confirm the Problem Is Not One Website or App

Open a second website that is unrelated to the first, then try another internet-dependent app. If most services work, your Wi-Fi and internet connection may be fine; the original website, app, account, or service could be unavailable.

Also check whether a VPN, security app, parental-control profile, or workplace connection is active. Temporarily disconnecting a VPN for a test can reveal whether the problem is the VPN rather than the home network.

2. Test Another Device on the Same Wi-Fi

Connect a second device to the same home Wi-Fi name and try two websites.

  • Only one device fails: Its saved network information, software, VPN, proxy, wireless adapter, or IP settings are the stronger suspects.
  • Every device fails: The problem is more likely upstream—at the router, modem, combined gateway, provider account, incoming line, or ISP.
  • Devices near the router work but distant devices do not: Treat this as a Wi-Fi coverage or interference problem, not a complete internet outage.

3. Make Sure You Joined the Correct Wi-Fi Network

Open the device’s Wi-Fi settings and verify the network name. Phones and computers sometimes reconnect to a guest network, public hotspot, extender, or an old saved network with a similar name.

If only this device is affected, disconnect and reconnect to the correct network. “Forget this network” can help when the saved password or security details are stale, but make sure you know the current Wi-Fi password first. Forgetting the network removes its saved connection information from that device.

4. Check for a Provider Outage or Account Alert

Use mobile data or another working connection to open your provider’s official app or support page. Sign in if necessary and check for a reported outage, account alert, or provider-run diagnostic. Do not rely solely on an unofficial outage map.

For example, Xfinity directs customers to its app or support tools to check outages and run network tests before restarting a gateway. If the provider confirms an outage, leave the equipment connected and wait for the provider’s restoration instructions. Local troubleshooting cannot repair a failure in the provider’s network.

5. Record the Modem, Router, or Gateway Lights

Before unplugging anything, photograph or write down the light colors and patterns. Equipment varies, so use the label and manual for the exact model rather than assuming every red, amber, blue, or blinking light has the same meaning.

On a separate modem and router, the modem’s online or internet status tells you about the incoming service, while the router’s internet or WAN status describes its link to the modem. A Wi-Fi light can remain on even when the router has lost internet access—that is why a device can appear connected while websites do not load.

6. Inspect Power and Cables Without Opening Equipment

Confirm that each power connector is fully seated and that the Ethernet cable between the modem and router is connected to the correct Internet or WAN port. For cable internet, finger-tighten a loose coaxial connector at the wall and modem or gateway. Do not use tools to overtighten it.

Stop if a power adapter, cable, outlet, modem, router, or gateway is unusually hot, damaged, wet, sparking, or producing a burnt smell. Disconnect power only if it is safe to do so and contact the provider or a qualified technician.



7. Restart the Network in the Correct Order

Use the provider’s app-based restart or diagnostic first when available. For a manual restart:

  1. Unplug its power cord.
  2. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  3. Reconnect power and allow the gateway to finish starting. This can take several minutes.
  4. Wait for its normal ready or online state before testing one device.

If You Have a Separate Modem and Router

  1. Unplug power from the router, then the modem.
  2. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the modem first and wait for its normal online state.
  4. Reconnect the router and wait for its normal ready state.
  5. Test one device before reconnecting or changing anything else.

A restart should not erase the Wi-Fi name or password. A factory reset is different and should not be used at this stage.

8. Compare Wi-Fi With a Wired Ethernet Test

If the router or gateway has an available LAN port and you have a known-good Ethernet cable, connect a computer directly to it and temporarily turn off that computer’s Wi-Fi. Do not disconnect the modem-to-router cable.

  • Ethernet works: The provider connection and routing path are probably operating. Concentrate on Wi-Fi settings, coverage, interference, or the affected device.
  • Ethernet also fails: The problem is more likely at the modem or gateway, provider account, incoming service, or router’s internet connection.

9. Check Airplane Mode, VPN, Proxy, and Security Controls

On the affected device, verify that Airplane Mode is off and Wi-Fi is on. Disconnect an active VPN temporarily, then test again. On a work-managed computer, do not remove security software or change company network settings; contact the organization’s support team.

If a manual proxy is configured and you did not intentionally set it, use the device manufacturer’s instructions or qualified help before changing it. Do not disable a firewall permanently to make the connection work.

10. Use the Device’s Built-In Network Diagnosis

For Windows 11, Microsoft recommends starting with the Network and Internet troubleshooter in the Get Help app. Windows can also reveal whether the computer failed to receive a usable local IP address from the router. An address beginning with 169.254 often indicates that the device did not receive an address through the normal automatic process.

DNS can also fail even when the underlying connection works. Because DNS, IP, driver, and adapter changes are device-specific, record any exact error before changing advanced settings. If every device has the same failure, changing DNS on only one computer is unlikely to repair the entire network.

11. Do Not Factory-Reset the Router Yet

A recessed Reset button can erase the network name, password, provider configuration, bridge-mode settings, parental controls, port forwarding, and connected-device rules. It may also make remote support more difficult.

Factory-reset only when the provider or router manufacturer recommends it for your exact equipment and you have the information needed to reconfigure the network. A reset cannot repair an ISP outage, damaged line, failed power adapter, or defective modem.

12. Decide Who Owns the Next Step

  • Provider outage or modem/gateway will not reach its normal online state: Contact the ISP and provide the recorded light pattern and tests.
  • Every device fails, but no outage is reported: Ask the ISP to check the account, signal, modem provisioning, and incoming line.
  • Ethernet works but Wi-Fi fails on every device: Troubleshoot the router’s wireless function, placement, or configuration.
  • Only one device fails: Continue with that device’s Wi-Fi, adapter, IP, DNS, VPN, proxy, or security settings.
  • Equipment is damaged, hot, wet, sparking, or smells burnt: Stop using it and arrange safe replacement or professional service.
